How many candidates are selected for SBI Clerk Mains after Prelims?

Exam patternUpdated 2026-10-23
Short answer

About 10 times the number of vacancies in each category, subject to availability, are shortlisted for Mains from a list of candidates in descending order of Prelims aggregate marks.

The 2026 notification says an adequate number of candidates in each category, as decided by the Bank - approximately 10 times the number of vacancies, subject to availability - will be shortlisted for the Main exam. The list is prepared in descending order of aggregate marks scored in Prelims.

How to read this

  • State-wise and category-wise: because candidates apply for one State/UT and merit is drawn state-wise and category-wise, the 10x ratio works within each State and category.
  • Approximate: it is a guide, not a fixed formula. The Bank decides the exact number.
  • Subject to availability: in a State or category with few applicants, fewer than 10 times may be called.

Example with 2026 vacancy numbers

State (regular vacancies, all categories)Approximate Mains shortlist
Maharashtra: 1,718About 17,000
Tamil Nadu: 1,410About 14,000
Odisha: 1,100About 11,000
Karnataka: 760About 7,600

These are only illustrations of the 10x ratio applied to the 2026 regular vacancy table; actual numbers are worked out category by category and may also account for backlog vacancies.

What it means for you

Since about one in ten Mains candidates in a category is finally selected, clearing Prelims is only the first filter. Your real competition starts at Mains, where General/Financial Awareness and Computer Aptitude are added.

How results are shown

Prelims results are published on SBI's careers page. In recent cycles, candidates logged in with their registration number and date of birth to see whether they qualified, along with their marks.

The shortlisting ratio can change. Confirm it in the latest official SBI notification.
