What is the probation period for SBI Clerk?

After selectionUpdated 2026-10-23
Short answer

As per the 2026 notification, newly appointed Junior Associates are on probation for a minimum of 6 months. You must complete the prescribed e-lessons to be confirmed, and probation can be extended if these are not done or if performance falls short.

The 2026 notification says newly appointed Junior Associates will be on probation for a minimum period of 6 months. The 2025 notification had the same clause.

Two conditions for confirmation

  1. E-lessons: you must complete the e-lessons prescribed by the Bank during probation. If you do not, your probation is extended until you complete them.
  2. Performance: before probation ends, your performance is evaluated. If it does not meet the Bank's expectations, probation may be extended.

Selected candidates are also governed by the Bank's service regulations in force at the time of joining.

What probation means day to day

  • You are a full employee and draw full pay from the date of joining.
  • You are posted to a branch in the State you applied for and work on regular tasks - customer service, cash and deposit work, sales of products and support to officers.
  • Your branch manager and the Bank's systems track your work, attendance and conduct.

How to get confirmed on time

  • Finish your e-lessons early instead of leaving them for the last weeks.
  • Learn the core banking screens and procedures your branch uses.
  • Take sales targets seriously. The post is "Customer Support & Sales", and the notification says new recruits must have a flair for marketing.
  • Keep attendance and conduct clean.

Probation and other plans

Probation does not stop you from preparing for other exams, but it is a good idea to settle into the job first. If you plan to apply elsewhere, check your appointment letter and service rules on permissions and notice.

The probation clause can change. Check the latest official SBI notification and your offer letter.
