For most people, joining as a clerk while continuing PO preparation is the safer path: you get a salary, banking experience and time. Waiting makes sense mainly if you are close to clearing PO and have attempts and age left.
This is a personal decision, but a few facts make it easier to think through.
Facts to check first
- Age: in 2026, PO was open to ages 21-30 and Clerk to 20-28 (as on 01.04.2026), with relaxations for reserved categories.
- Attempts: PO limited UR/EWS candidates to 6 chances, counted each time you appear in Mains. The Clerk notification did not state a limit.
- Clerks already in SBI's clerical cadre are not eligible to apply again under the Junior Associate recruitment. Whether serving employees can apply for PO, and on what terms, depends on that year's PO notification.
Joining as clerk: pros and cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Salary from now (about Rs 46,000 a month at Mumbai in 2026) | Less time to study after work |
| Real banking knowledge that helps in PO GA and the interview | Branch work can be demanding |
| Financial security reduces exam pressure | Posted within one state for at least five years |
Waiting for PO: when it makes sense
- You cleared PO Mains or reached the interview before and missed narrowly
- You have family support to study full-time for another cycle
- You still have several PO attempts and years of eligibility left
A middle path
Join as a clerk, then keep a reduced but steady routine: 2-3 hours on weekdays, mocks on weekends, and full focus during leave before the PO exams. Many people move to officer roles this way, either through PO recruitment or through the bank's internal promotion process.
Think about the next three years
Write down where you want to be in three years and work backwards. If an officer role is the goal, list the PO and other officer exams you are eligible for in that period, the attempts you have left, and the study hours a clerk job would leave you. That usually makes the decision clearer than comparing salaries alone.
