What is the Local Language Proficiency Test (LLPT) in SBI Clerk?

Exam patternUpdated 2026-10-23
Short answer

The LLPT is a qualifying test of the local language of the State you applied for. It is taken after Mains and before joining, only by candidates who did not study that language in 10th or 12th. Failing it means no appointment.

The Local Language Proficiency Test (LLPT) is Phase III of SBI Clerk selection. It checks whether you can work in the specified local language of the State/UT you applied for.

Who has to take it

  • Exempt: candidates who produce a 10th or 12th standard mark sheet or certificate showing they studied the specified opted local language.
  • Must take it: provisionally selected candidates who did not study that language in 10th or 12th.

When and where

It is conducted after you qualify the online Main exam but before joining. You take it at a centre in the State you applied for, decided by the Bank, at your own expense.

The notification's table refers to passages and questions in the non-verbal and verbal parts. The non-verbal part tests reading and writing; the verbal part tests speaking and understanding. Candidates must score the minimum qualifying marks set by the Bank in each individual test, with 5% relaxation for SC/ST/OBC/PwBD/XS/DXS candidates.

What happens if you fail

The notification is clear: candidates who fail to qualify this test will not be offered appointment, and candidates not found proficient in the language are disqualified. Your Mains rank does not save you.

Preparing for it

  • Learn to read and write the script, not just speak.
  • Practise reading short passages aloud and answering simple questions about them.
  • Write short paragraphs on daily topics - bank, family, your town.
If you are applying outside your home state, start the language the day you decide on the state. A few months of steady practice is usually needed.
The pattern and qualifying marks can change. Check the latest official SBI notification.
