Can I apply for SBI Clerk vacancies in a state other than my home state?

EligibilityUpdated 2026-10-23
Short answer

Yes. There is no domicile rule. You can apply for any one State/UT, but you must be proficient in its local language, compete on that state's category-wise merit list, and be posted in that state if selected.

Yes. SBI does not require you to be a resident or domicile of the State/UT you apply for. Any eligible Indian citizen can choose any one State/UT. What follows from that choice is what you should think about.

What your State/UT choice decides

  • Language: you must be proficient in the specified local language of that State/UT. If you did not study it in 10th or 12th, you must pass the Local Language Proficiency Test after Mains.
  • Competition: the merit list is drawn up state-wise and category-wise. You compete only with candidates who applied for the same State/UT and category.
  • Posting: selected candidates are posted in the State they applied for.
  • Transfer: the 2026 notification says there is no inter-circle or inter-state transfer before completing 5 years of service, and after that only in exceptional cases such as extreme compassionate or spouse grounds, at the Bank's discretion.
  • Exam language: the medium of the Numerical Ability and Reasoning tests depends on the State applied for (English, Hindi and, in many states, the regional language).

What it does not decide

You can write Prelims and Mains at any notified centre in India, even outside the State you applied for. Only the language test, if you need it, has to be taken at a centre in the State you applied for.

Choosing a state wisely

Some candidates pick a state with more vacancies. That can work, but compare it honestly with your ability to work in that language for at least five years far from home. A higher vacancy count does not always mean a lower cut-off, because more people apply there too.

You can apply for only one State/UT in a recruitment cycle, and the choice cannot be changed after submission. Read the vacancy table and transfer clause in the latest official notification first.
