Can I prepare for SBI Clerk without coaching?

PreparationUpdated 2026-10-23
Short answer

Yes. The syllabus is standard and every topic can be learnt from free material, a few books and online practice. What coaching mainly gives is structure and deadlines, which you can build yourself.

Yes, many selected candidates prepare on their own. SBI Clerk does not test anything a coaching class owns. Quant is arithmetic, DI and simplification. Reasoning is a fixed set of patterns. English is grammar, vocabulary and reading. GA is facts you can read on official sites.

What coaching gives you, and how to replace it

Coaching givesSelf-study replacement
A fixed timetableA written weekly plan with daily question targets
Teacher for doubtsStep-by-step solutions, previous-year solutions and a study partner
Classroom testsTimed sectional tests and full mocks
Peer pressureA study group, a leaderboard, or a friend you report to each evening
GA notesRBI press releases, PIB, the Union Budget site and a monthly current-affairs compilation

A simple self-study routine

  1. Learn a topic from one source only (a book chapter or a notes page). Do not collect five sources for the same topic.
  2. Solve 30-50 questions on it the same day, then 15-20 again after three days.
  3. Write every wrong question in a mistake book with the reason you got it wrong.
  4. From week 5, take mocks and spend as long analysing each mock as you spent writing it.

When coaching may still help

If you have tried self-study for a month and you cannot keep a routine, or you are very weak in English or maths and need someone to explain basics, a class may be worth it. Choose based on a free demo and the quality of their tests, not on claimed selection numbers.

Free official material exists: SBI publishes an information handout with sample questions along with the call letter, and offers online pre-examination training for SC/ST/OBC/ex-servicemen/PwBD candidates who opt for it in the application.
