The main banking exams after graduation are SBI Clerk and SBI PO, IBPS Clerk (now CSA) and IBPS PO, the IBPS RRB exams for Office Assistant and Officer Scale I, and RBI Assistant. All of them need a graduation degree in any discipline. For most fresh graduates, a clerk-level exam is the natural first target because its syllabus is the base of every other one.

Patterns, age limits and dates differ by exam and change from year to year, so always read the current notification. This site prepares you for SBI Clerk; the overlap with the others is explained below.
Clerk or PO: how to decide
The two kinds of post differ more than the names suggest.
- Clerk-level posts are customer-facing and recruited state-wise, so you usually work in the state you applied for and need its local language. SBI's 2026 notification, for example, says there is no inter-state transfer before five years.
- Officer posts carry more responsibility and higher pay, involve transfers across a wider area, and add a descriptive paper or interview to selection.
Many candidates take both, starting with clerk exams. Clerk Prelims and PO Prelims share most question types; PO papers are harder and add topics such as higher-level DI and descriptive writing.
Which exam to target first
A useful way to think about it:
- Want a bank job in your home state soon? Target SBI Clerk and IBPS Clerk together. The Prelims syllabus is largely shared.
- Weak in English? Look at RRB Office Assistant too. Its Prelims has no English, and its Mains lets you choose Hindi or English for the language paper.
- Strong in all sections and aiming for officer posts? Prepare for PO, but write clerk exams in the same year as a safety net and as practice under exam conditions.
Whichever you choose, the clerk-level syllabus of English, Quant, Reasoning, General/Financial Awareness and Computer is the foundation.
How the year usually runs
Exam calendars shift, but in recent years most bank notifications have come in the second half of the year. In 2026, SBI Clerk Prelims was held in September, IBPS CSA Prelims in October, and the RRB Office Assistant Prelims is scheduled for late in the year. Mains exams follow from November into early the next year.
That means a graduate who starts preparing in the first half of the year is in a good position, and one who starts after a notification is out has only a few weeks. Track the current cycle on our exam dates page.
