Start the day after Prelims without waiting for the result. Give GA and computer about half your time, raise Quant and Reasoning to Mains level, and take a full 190-question Mains mock every week.
Start immediately. The 2026 notification gave Prelims tentatively in September and Mains tentatively in November 2026, so the gap is about two months at most. Part of that time passes before the Prelims result is out, so waiting for it wastes a large share of the window.
How Mains is different
| Section | Questions | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| General/Financial Awareness | 50 | 50 | 35 min |
| General English | 40 | 40 | 35 min |
| Quantitative Aptitude | 50 | 50 | 45 min |
| Reasoning Ability and Computer Aptitude | 50 | 60 | 45 min |
| Total | 190 | 200 | 2 h 40 min |
Only the Mains aggregate is used for the merit list, so this is the exam that decides selection. Questions in Reasoning and Computer carry 1.2 marks each, so a wrong answer there costs 0.3.
A daily split for the gap
- GA (2-2.5 h): static banking and RBI first, then current affairs, schemes and budget.
- Computer (45 min): fundamentals, MS Office, networking, security, shortcuts.
- Quant (1.5 h): caselet and mixed DI, arithmetic word problems, data sufficiency.
- Reasoning (1.5 h): longer puzzles, logical reasoning (assumption, conclusion), coded inequality.
- English (45 min): RC, cloze, connectors, phrasal verbs.
Mocks
Take one full Mains mock a week and two or three sectional tests. A 160-minute paper needs stamina, so practise sitting through the whole length.
Your first week after Prelims
- Day 1: take a diagnostic Mains mock to see where the gaps are.
- Days 1-2: collect one static banking source and one monthly current-affairs compilation for the last six months.
