What is the SBI Clerk waiting list and how does it work?

Dates & resultsUpdated 2026-10-23
Short answer

SBI keeps a wait list of up to 50% of vacancies, State-wise and category-wise. Candidates are released from it on a quarterly basis against non-joining and resignations from the same batch, and it is valid for one year from the final result.

The waiting list gives a second chance to candidates who just missed the final merit list. The 2026 notification describes it like this:

  • Size: up to 50% of vacancies, maintained State-wise and category-wise.
  • When it moves: candidates are released from the wait list on a quarterly basis.
  • Why it moves: only against non-joining and resignations out of the current batch.
  • Condition: you must have secured the minimum qualifying marks stipulated by the Bank.
  • Validity: one year from the date of declaration of the final result.

Selection from the wait list is also provisional. It is subject to qualifying the local language test (if applicable), meeting the eligibility criteria and the information you gave being genuine. You will be asked to complete the same formalities as candidates in the main list.

Practical points

  • Keep your registered email and mobile active for at least a year after the final result.
  • Keep your certificates (especially OBC/EWS certificates with valid dates) ready, because you may be called at short notice.
  • Do not count only on the wait list. Movement depends on how many people decline or leave, which varies by State and category.
  • Keep preparing for the next cycle. If you are released from the wait list, you can decide then.
Wait list rules can change. Check the latest official notification and SBI's careers page for list releases.
